Under the banner and balloons of Amina Women’s Project’s ‘I
Love Alum Rock’ campaign, in conjunction with Faith Watch, the three Washwood Heath
councillors, and a small army of local residents and volunteers, the police,
the fire service and the City Council were armed with litter pickers, rubbish
bags and on a mission.
Over the next eight weeks, at 11.00 every Wednesday morning,
Wright Road in the heart of Alum Rock will be the site of a weekly street
clean. Enthusiastic local residents are invited to help in making the most
visible difference possible to the quality of life: clearing the road of
rubbish and helping make Alum Rock a cleaner area all can take pride in.
By handing out leaflets to local residents with contact
details on how to report waste dumping, missed refuse collections and otherwise
unreported social issues, the campaign aims to make a long-term contribution to the
betterment of Alum Rock.
To that end over time the idea of bringing local agencies and residents together to clear litter could be extended to other
streets in the area. To make this possible more Community Champions are needed
to help develop the ‘I Love Alum Rock’ project and improve the district for
everyone.
So, if on the next few Wednesdays you see an enthusiastic
team of local residents, activists, police, fire officers and City Council
staff picking up litter on Wright Road, don’t just watch – grab a bag and help out!
